EYFS
This is where your Broseley journey begins…
In the Early Years, we value the opportunity to learn through play, and therefore we strive to provide endless opportunities to learn through doing and talking. Play unlocks opportunities for imagination and curiosity, building connections, development of language and growth in independence.
Areas of Learning
Reception has seven Areas of Learning in the Early Years Statutory Framework:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Literacy
Through carefully planned activities and lessons, children will continually develop their phonemic awareness in the Early Years. This is the ability to identify and manipulate sounds in spoken words. At Broseley, we use a phonics scheme named Unlocking Letters and Sounds. Each child in Reception receive a daily taught phonics lesson where they learn new phonemes (spoken sounds) and corresponding graphemes (letter or letters that represent spoken sounds) and apply this to reading and spelling words. For more information, check out our Phonics and Early Reading page. Alongside phonics, we have a large emphasis on developing vocabulary, imagination and a love of reading through exposure to high-quality texts that are shared with the children daily. We foster children’s interests and enthusiasm to write by using Drawing Club.
Mathematics
In Reception, we use have devised a rigorous mathematics curriculum whereby we build upon prior knowledge and understanding. We supplement our curriculum with Mastering Number. We focus largely on subitising, composition, cardinality and comparison of numbers to provide a deep understanding of number and the foundations for problem solving and reasoning and shape, space and measure, which can be taken through their Broseley journey, fostering life-long mathematicians.
